Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to examine contemporary popular music within the context of popular culture and to enable students to critically analyze popular music genres, their production and circulation processes, and their social and cultural representations. The course aims to develop students’ ability to conceptualize the relationships between popular music, media, consumption, identity, and everyday life through theoretical perspectives.

Course Content

This course focuses on contemporary popular music through the lenses of popular culture, media, and digitalization. The course examines the historical development of popular music, processes of cultural production and commercialization, the impact of digital platforms on music consumption, and forms of identity and representation produced through popular music. Students engage in critical analyses of selected popular music examples to explore the social and cultural functions of popular music.

1.Identify and relate contemporary popular music genres to their historical, social, and cultural contexts within the framework of popular culture.
2.Explain popular music as a product of popular culture by examining the relationships between music, media, consumption, and everyday life.
3.Analyze contemporary popular music examples in terms of lyrics, image, music videos, performance, and digital circulation practices.
4.Discuss representations of identity, body, gender, and lifestyle produced through popular music using key theories of popular culture.
5.Interpret the mechanisms of popularity, visibility, and audience engagement in popular music content circulated through digital platforms and social media.
6.Critically evaluate the relationship between popular culture and popular music with reference to commercialization, standardization, and cultural production processes.
7.The student can critically present a selected popular music example in the form of a presentation or project by using the theoretical and analytical frameworks learned in the course.”
