Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the principles of Information Technologies and their use in greenhouse farming, to identify and use relevant hardware and software, to gain experience in office applications, to use internet technologies effectively, to have a vision about agricultural informatics and agricultural clinics, and to acquire knowledge in farm information management, electronic commerce and electronic publishing.

Course Content

Historical development of information technologies, different operating systems (Linux, Windows), introduction of information-based software to access information, basic computer knowledge (word processing, spreadsheets, database management), communication via teleconferencing and videoconferencing, data mining and searching on agriculture-related sites: virtual cafes, virtual publishing, online expert systems, use of information technologies in agricultural production (soil cultivation, fertilizer use, etc.), ability to monitor product prices in markets, ability to obtain market intelligence, e-commerce
