Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to explain the chaotic nature of transportation systems, demonstrate the availability of different transportation methods, provide comprehension of transport systems through their technical and operational characteristics, teach how to determine and plan the optimum investment and operational scales in transportation systems, and introduce network structuring forms. Additionally, the course aims to enhance students' ability to conduct sectoral analysis by elaborating on key concepts such as transport terminals, accessibility, connectivity, and intelligent transportation systems with applied examples.

Course Content

Within the scope of the course, the concept and dimensions of transportation, the purpose of transportation and its relationship with demand, transport modes, and intermodal competition are examined in detail. The technical, economic, and operational aspects of transportation are analyzed in the context of road, air, maritime, and rail systems. Furthermore, the concepts of intermodal, multimodal, and combined transportation, transport terminals, spatial planning models, the notions of hinterland and forland, accessibility, connectivity matrices, and distribution models are evaluated. The geography of transportation networks, network classifications, network data models, and route planning are also included in the course content. The subject is enriched with contemporary applications through examples of intelligent transportation systems in Türkiye and around the world.
