Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to enable students to understand the basic concepts, pathophysiological processes, and the body’s response to surgery related to surgical conditions, and to provide them with knowledge and awareness regarding preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient care. Additionally, the course aims to enable students to recognize complications that may arise during the surgical process and to develop appropriate management strategies.

Course Content

This course covers the body’s responses to homeostasis and its disruption, the surgical stress response, fluid-electrolyte and acid-base balance, and the process of shock and its treatment. In addition, the course examines fundamental concepts in surgical diseases, tissue injury, wound healing and treatment, surgical infections, and preventive measures. In the subsequent weeks of the course, preoperative preparation, patient management during surgery, and postoperative care processes are addressed using a comprehensive approach.

Learning Outcomes
1.It explains the concept of homeostasis and the physiological responses of the organism when homeostasis is disrupted.
2.The effects of surgical stress on the body's systems.
3.Explains fluid-electrolyte and acid-base imbalances.
4.Classifies types of shock based on their characteristics.
5.It analyzes the wound healing process and the factors affecting tissue damage.
6.Explains the development of surgical infections and methods of prevention.
7.It evaluates patient care processes before, during, and after surgery.
