Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to recognize the concept of addiction and addictive substances, understand their effects on individual and public health, and gain knowledge about care and approaches for individuals with substance addiction. In addition, the course aims to increase students’ awareness about types of addiction, causes of addiction, and prevention methods.

Course Content

This course covers the basic concepts related to substance addiction, including its etiology, epidemiology, and history. Addictive substances such as cigarettes, alcohol, cannabis, opioids, inhalants, amphetamines and similar substances are examined in terms of their characteristics, effects, and withdrawal symptoms. In addition, behavioral addictions (such as gambling, shopping, and internet addiction), psychiatric conditions associated with substance use, treatment approaches, the role of health professionals, and preventive measures in the community are discussed.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Concept of addiction, types of addiction, behavioral addiction, physical and psychological dependence, and withdrawal.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Legal regulations related to addiction: alcohol and substance use in civil law, criminal law, misdemeanors law and related regulations.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Alcohol addiction: effects of alcohol, development of addiction, effects on health, and treatment approaches.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Drug addiction: types of drugs, their effects, mechanisms of addiction and treatment approaches.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Tobacco addiction: nicotine dependence, effects on health and smoking cessation methods.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Alcohol and substance use in workplaces: risks and evaluation in terms of occupational health and safety.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Alcohol and substance use in traffic: legal alcohol limits, traffic safety and legal sanctions.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Gambling addiction: causes, symptoms and treatment approaches.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Shopping addiction and consumer behavior.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Computer, mobile phone and internet addiction.
Week 11 - Theoretical
