Objectives of the Course

Physiological events in plant production and transport of water from soil to plants, transport of nutrients from soil and leaves to root and stem, osmosis and diffusion events, metabolic processes such as photosynthesis and respiration are explained with physical and chemical principles.

Course Content

Basic terms and concepts, Cell growth and differentiation, Mechanism of plant growth regulators, biological effects and chemistry, Seed germination and seedling growth control with plant growth regulators.

Learning Outcomes
1.Learn the importance of plant physiology in plant breeding
2.Gains knowledge of the processes such as germination, emergence and dormancy in plants and the role of plant hormones in these processes
3.Learns the plant transport system,the uptake and transport of water and plant nutrients
4.Understand the metabolic activities such as respiration, transpiration and photosynthesis in plants
5.Learn about stress physiology in plants.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Giving information about the course content and the importance of physiology in plant breeding
Week 2 - Theoretical
Structure and properties of water, osmosis, plasmolysis, cellular entry and exit of water.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Water and its availability in soil, diffusion of water at plant root region and in soil
Week 4 - Theoretical
Water uptake by plants and transport by plant through xylem,structure of xylem tissue
Week 5 - Theoretical
Transpiration, structure of stomata and gutation phenomena
Week 6 - Theoretical
Soil solution, ion absorption by plants, transport of ions to the root effect area and uptake of nutrients by roots
Week 7 - Theoretical
Structure of phloem tissue, transport of organic compounds by phloem in plant
Week 8 - Theoretical
Effects of proteins, amino acids and enzymes on plant growth
Week 9 - Theoretical
Effects of substances such as carbohydrates, vitamins, lipids on plant growth
Week 10 - Theoretical
Germination, emergence, rooting and dormancy events in plants
Week 11 - Theoretical
Definition and importance of photosynthesis, prime reactions in photosynthesis, light and dark reactions, factors affecting photosynthesis

Respiration and its importance in plants, aerobic respiration and its stages
