Objectives of the Course

Efficiency and loss in power electronics, operation principles of semi-conductors used in power control, protection, control elements, circuits, driver circuit design, and power resource designs.

Course Content

Power semi-conductors, diodes, transistors, tristors, triac, mosphet structures, operation principles and characteristics. Protection and control elements of semi conductors used in power control; UJT, PUT, SUS, SBS, Diacs. Designs of power electronics, controlled and uncontrolled rectifiers, DC invertors, driver circuits, resonance invertors, switched power resources, motor control applicaitons, correction of power coefficient.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Efficiency analysis in Power Electronics circuits, semiconductor definition, power diodes. Integrated power circuits.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Single-phase uncontrolled rectifier circuits and R-L load applications.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Three-phase rectifier circuits and output voltage regulation
Week 4 - Theoretical
Controlled semiconductors, SCR and controlled rectifier circuits and R-L load applications
Week 5 - Theoretical
Thyristor-Triac trigger circuits and trigger circuit elements; PUT, DIYAK, UJT and oscillators.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Trigger circuit isolation systems and extinguishing circuits
Week 7 - Theoretical
Alternating Voltage Choppers and on-off power control, phase controlled power circuit applications

MOSFET, IGBT and Direct Voltage Converters; Stepping Down Type Direct Voltage Converter Design

DC Power Supplies and Direct Voltage Converters with Feedback Transformers. Resonant type converters

Inverters; Single phase land wave inverters, Half Bridge Inverters.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Full bridge single phase inverters, Three phase inverters.
Week 14 - Theoretical
Modulation methods in inverters, Pulse width modulation and sine modulation inverter.
