Objectives of the Course

Examination of the architectural remains of western Anatolia, mainland Greece and the Aegean Islands from the Geometric and Archaic Periods; It is aimed to teach the developmental stages of Ionic and Doric architectural orders.

Course Content

The architectural remains of the Geometric and Archaic Periods of Western Anatolia, Mainland Greece and the Aegean Islands will be examined with the help of photographs taken mostly on site.

Introduction to the Geometric Age. Construction techniques and materials used in buildings.
Week 2 - Theoretical
The origins and development of wooden and mud-brick architecture in Anatolia, Greece and the Aegean Islands.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Geometric Period in Western Anatolia.
Week 4 - Theoretical
The importance of model structures made of terracotta for votive purposes in understanding the architecture of the Geometric Period.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Mainland Greece in the Geometric Period.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Archaic wooden building depictions on the vases decorated by Sophilos and Kleitias and their importance in the history of architecture.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Introduction to Doric architecture of the Archaic Period. Analysing the architectural elements of Doric order.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Archaic Doric temples of Western Anatolia. Assos Athena and Emecik Apollo Temple.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Introduction to Ionic order. Architectural elements of Ionic order. The Archaic artemis temple at Ephesos.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Didymaion.

Archaic frieze problems of the Didymaion.
