Course Content

The Archaic Period is generally assigned between 630-490 BC. When Archaic ceramics is mentioned, Athens and the Black Figure Technique come to mind first. At the beginning of the period in question, Athens succeeded in becoming an important center in ceramic production. The appreciation of the Black Figure Technique played a very important role in Athens capture of the ceramic market. In fact, the Black Figure Technique is not a technique invented by Athenian masters. It is thought that the technique was first found in Corinthos around 700 BC. The Athenian masters succeeded in making it an in-demand technique. IIn the first phase of the course, the potters and painters who produced pottery until the end of the 6th century BC, starting with the Berlin A34 Painter, will be discussed chronologically. In the second phase of the course, the important ceramic groups of Western Anatolia will be discussed. North and South Ionia Workshops, Fikellura, Ephesos Group Ceramics and Lydia Ceramics will be discussed.
