Objectives of the Course

This course is designed for the fourth-year student and covers the basic topics of metabolism. It is aimed to learn the chemical and physicochemical basis of metabolic events in living systems.

Learning the chemical aspects of metabolic pathways, energy metabolism and metabolic control.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Synthesis of nucleic acids. DNA and RNA synthesis.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Structure and functioning of genes in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Gene and genetic code. Description of the genetic code.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Features of the codon unit. Structure of ribosome and tRNA. An overview of protein biosynthesis.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Stages of protein biosynthesis. Protein biosynthesis inhibitors.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Introduction to metabolism. Basic definitions. General features of metabolic pathways. Types of organic reactions observed in metabolic events. Organelle specificity in the eukaryotic cell.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Carbohydrate metabolism. Digestion of carbohydrates. Glycolysis. Evaluation of pyruvate in anaerobic environments. Metabolism of hexoses other than glucose.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Glycogen synthesis and degradation. D-Glucoronate metabolic pathway. Gluconeogenesis. Cori cycle.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Pentose phosphate metabolic pathway. Citric acid cycle. (Midterm Examination)
Week 9 - Theoretical
Electron transport. Kinetics and thermodynamics of transport. Enzymes involved in electron transport. Malate-aspartate shuttle. Oxidative phosphorylation. Thermogenesis.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Lipid catabolism. Digestion, absorption and transport of lipids. Chylomicron, VDLD, LDL, HDL structures. ß-oxidation of saturated fatty acids.
Week 11 - Theoretical
ß-oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. Oxidation of fatty acids containing an odd number of carbon atoms. Peroxisomal ß-oxidation. Ketone bodies.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Lipid biosynthesis. Chain elongation in fatty acid biosynthesis. Comparison of the chemicals and energetics of fatty acid synthesis and fatty acid oxidation. Mechanisms of triglyceride, phospholipid and cholesterol biosynthesis.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Digestion of proteins and metabolism of amino acids. Degradation of amino acids. Formation of nitrogenous waste substances. Urea cycle. Amino acid biosynthesis. Essential amino acids. Biosynthesis of non-essential amino acids.
Week 14 - Theoretical
Nucleic acid metabolism. Synthesis of purine ring, pyrimidine ring and nucleotides. Nucleic acid catabolism. Purine and pyrimidine catabolism. Uric acid formation and destruction.
