Objectives of the Course

This course aims to teach students general chemistry concepts, the importance of chemistry in our lives and its relations with other branches of science and to gain basic chemistry knowledge and problem-solving skills.

Course Content

Properties of matter, atoms and atomic theory, electronic structure of atoms, periodic table, chemical compounds, chemical reactions, aqueous solution reactions, gases, thermochemistry, chemical bonding, liquids, solids and intermolecular forces.

Name of Lecturer(s)
Prof. Muhammet Emin GÜNAY
Learning Outcomes
1.Know and compare the states and classification of matter, the techniques used to separate mixtures, the differences between chemical and physical changes, understand the difference between accuracy and precision, and know how to express numbers correctly.
2.Know the basic laws of chemistry and the atomic laws that have been developed until today, interpret the difference between them, and know the chemical elements, the periodic table, and the meaning of the mole concept.
3.Write and name the formulas of chemical compounds, write chemical equations involving chemical compounds, determine the oxidation step, and make stoichiometric calculations by determining the limiting component in chemical equations.
4.Know the reactions that occur in aqueous solutions, determine the differences between these reactions, and know the titration process.
5.Know the properties of gases, understand the gas laws, know the thermochemistry accompanying chemical reactions, and apply the first law of thermodynamics to chemistry problems.
6.Determine the electron structure, quantum theory, and quantum numbers of the atom, make the electron arrangement, understand how the chemical bond is formed using this information, and know Lewis structure and chemical bond theories.
7.Know intermolecular interactions and properties of solids and liquids.
8.Uses chemistry knowledge correctly in the courses and laboratories in the following years, understands the applications of chemistry in daily life, and follows the developments in the chemical industry with the knowledge acquired.
