Objectives of the Course

• To provide students with a knowledge of the theoretical approaches in urban sociology and current trends in urban theory • To make them understand urbanisation processes and the Dynamics that this process creates in the World and in Turkey • To analyse urban structure in Turkey in terms of social, cultural, economic and political perspectives particularly by looking at actual sociological developments • To increase an awareness about urban environment and urban problems

Urban Sociology in West; Urban Sociology in Turkey; City as a Concept; General characteristics of cities; History of Cities; First Cities in History; Medieval Cities; Post-Industrial Cities; Urban and Urbanization Theories in Sociology; Migration, Urbanisation and Urbanity; City, Identity and Politics; Relationship Between Urbanisation and Modernisation, and Post-Modernism; City and Environment

Learning Outcomes
1.Be able to analyze the city by having a good command of the basic sociological concepts and theories related to the sociology of the city.
2.Can understand and explain cultural, social and spatial differences and similarities in the city.

4.Gains sensitivity about the urban environment.
5.They can adapt their theoretical knowledge of urban sociology to urban dynamics in Turkey.
