Objectives of the Course

In this course we will be studying the changing attitude towards age and aging in society. In addition, as the aging is one of the realities of the current times we will be looking at socioeconomic, political and cultural impacts of aging.

Course Content

The Sociology of Aging provides an analytical framework for understanding the interactions between individuals' lives and changing social structures in relation to aging. This course is designed to provide students with an overview of the sociology of aging. Topics to be covered in the course will include: aging as a social process, aging societies, societal views of aging, myths surrounding aging, social aging, social change and aging, understanding age and aging and theories of aging, groups of the elderly, the meaning(s) of aging, study, retirement, pensions, social security, post-retirement work, intergenerational contact and kinship, family support, fictitious kinship, community, personal relationships, ageism, social theories, ecological environment, health care, aged care.
