This course offers a critical examination of the social structure of Turkey. It will inescapably address the historical background to the modern Turkish republic, the collapse and subsequent disintegration of Ottoman Empire. It will also discuss the foundation of the Turkish republic, the founding principles and early years of the republic. It will move on then to the contemporary problems, and main institutions such as the economy, politics, culture, religion and population. The main objective of this module is to examine the social structure of contemporary Turkish society in the 21 century.
This module will focus upon the following subjects: The concept of social structure, the constituting elements of social structure, the early years of the republic, demographic structure, urban and urbanization, modernity and national identity in Turkey, religion and secularization, economy, economic structure and crisis and the EU membership and its impacts on social structure.

| 1. | As well as introducing concepts like structure and society we will discuss the main aspects of social structure. Also different approaches will be discussed. |
| 2. | The concept of structure is a dynamic one, has been changing constantly. In lectures we will discuss the changing nature of structure. Through these discussions students understanding of historical and current structural futures will be increased. |
| 3. | Through this course student will have a better understanding, and experience of social structure: not only students will have a comprehensive knowledge of Turkish social structure they will also have experience end tools to use when they are graduated from the university. |
| 4. | In order to grip and analyse the multi dimensional structure of current Turkish society students will need to improve their knowledge on economic, cultural, political futures of Turkey. |
