Objectives of the Course

To provide students with reading and understanding the historical texts of the Turkish language and detect the coordinates in national and universal cultural accumulation

Course Content

The grammar and transcription studies on the Works of historical Turkish dialects, the complementary disciplines of linguistics such as etymology and semantics. Comparing these dialects within themselves and with other Turkish dialects

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to transcript and transliterate of the texts from the given period perfectly.
2.To be able to understand the texts s/he read and put down on paper
3.To be able to go over morphological and phonetic studies on these texts
4.To be able to go over syntactic studies on these texts
5.To be able to define Chagatay Turkish reached the 16- 17 centuries Ottoman Turkish perfection hundred years ago and to be able to exemplify this
6.To be able to recognize and compare the effects of Chagatay Turkish and other dialects on many significant Ottoman poets Fuzulî being in the first place
7.To be able to exemplify the language usages reflecting the thoughts, a kind of language theory, from the poets of the period Nevaî being in the first place
8.To be able to apply on the chosen texts
9.To be able to study syntax on the chosen texts
10.To be able to apply bibliography
11.To be able to compare and contrast the texts of historical Turkish dialect texts with Orhon and Turkey Turkish texts
12.To be able to compare and contrast the characteristics of historical Turkish dialects

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
The formation process of historical Turkish accents. An overview of the formation of historical dialects such as Khwarezm-Kipchak, Chagatai and Old Anatolian Turkish in the Middle Turkish Period.
Week 2 - Theoretical
General features of historical Turkish dialects: Similar and different features between them in phonetics, morphology and lexis.
Week 3 - Theoretical
The formation of Chagatai Turkish, its classification, scientific studies (bibliography), information about the most important works and authors, Chagatai dictionaries and the reasons for their writing.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Phonetics of Chagatai Turkish. Orthographic features, phonetic differences with Karakhanid and Khwarezm Turkish.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Morphology of Chagatai Turkish. Noun category: Plural suffixes, Possessive suffixes, Case suffixes, Numbers, Adjective Verbs, Adverb Verbs, Noun Verbs.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Morphology of Chagatai Turkish. Verb category: Verb construction suffixes, personal suffixes used in verb conjugation, Tenses (Present, Seen and Heard Past, Future and Present Tenses).
Week 7 - Theoretical
Morphology of Chagatai Turkish. Modals, prepositions, conjunctions, adverbs and adjectives.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Sample text translation from Chagatai Turkish: Translation of examples from the poems of Gedayi, Atayi, Haydar Tilbe, Mevlana Lütfi from the first Chagatai period.
