Objectives of the Course

Providing with general and basic characteristics of Old Turkish, to present the development of Turkish language from historical to today.

Course Content

The structure and development of Turkish in Gokturk and Uighur periods; phonetic, morphological and semantic studies on words and morphemes; the study of historical and geographical characteristics of Turkish language.

Learning Outcomes
1.to be able to explain basic word existence of Turkey Turkish beneath the historical depths and this period, to make a connection between old and new language areas.
2.Recognizes Köktürk letters, writes with these letters and can read written texts.
3.Recognizes Köktürk inscriptions and understands their place and importance in the history of the Turkish language.
4.Understands the phonetics of Köktürkçe.
5.Understands the morphology of Kokturkish.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Content introduction and general evaluation of the course.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Pre-Köktürk period of the Turkish language: Chinese, Sumerian, Greek, etc. Traces of Turkish in sources.
Week 3 - Theoretical
The first written period of the Turkish language: Historical information about the Köktürk period.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Introduction of texts with Köktürk letters: Tonyukuk, Köl Tigin, Bilge Kağan inscriptions.
Week 5 - Theoretical
The discovery and analysis of Köktürk letter inscriptions and the first publications on the inscriptions.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Introducing the Köktürk alphabet and opinions about the origin of the alphabet.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Teaching the Köktürk alphabet.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Phonology of Kokturkish.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Morphology of Kokturk: Noun inflection.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Morphology of Kokturk: Verb inflection.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Reading exercises and grammatical studies of texts with Köktürk letters: Köl Tigin inscription.
