Objectives of the Course

Teaching the Arabic-origin Turkish alphabet in which Ottoman Turkish was written. Acquiring the ability to read Turkish texts in Arabic letters by giving information about Ottoman Turkish.

Course Content

Examining the periods of Ottoman Turkish, introducing the Ottoman alphabet, writing the letters one by one and giving their equivalents in today's alphabet, showing the signs used in the transliteration system for the equivalents that do not exist in our current alphabet, carrying out practical writing and reading exercises from simple texts written in the Turkish alphabet of Arabic origin.

Learning Outcomes
1.Determining the place of Ottoman Turkish in the history of the Turkish language and learning the beginning, middle and end combinations of the letters in the Arabic-origin Turkish alphabet, depending on the original letters.
2.Learning the transcription alphabet of letters used in Ottoman Turkish that do not exist in our current alphabet.
3.Learning the formation and pronunciation of Turkish vowels in the Turkish alphabet of Arabic origin and their spelling rules in old letter words. Learning the spelling of vowels in Arabic and Persian words and the vowels and other special signs in Arabic.
4.Characteristics of consonants and recognition of letters that do not have sound equivalents in Turkish
5.Gaining reading and writing skills using simple words written in the Ottoman alphabet
6.Learning the formulaic spellings of Turkish suffixes used in Ottoman Turkish in Old Anatolian Turkish.
7.Learning the spellings and meanings of some Arabic and Persian words with special spellings
8.Gaining the ability to read simple texts written in the Ottoman alphabet, mostly Turkish words.
9.Gaining the ability to write simple texts written in Latin letters in the Ottoman alphabet

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
IIntroducing the basic sources related to the course, giving information about Ottoman Turkish and its periods, introducing the letters of the Turkish alphabet of Arabic origin.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Introducing the letters of the Turkish alphabet of Arabic origin by writing their shapes at the beginning, middle and end on the board, and showing the sound equivalents of the letters in this alphabet in today's Turkish with transcription signs.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Introducing the letters of the Turkish alphabet of Arabic origin by writing their shapes at the beginning, middle and end on the board, and showing the sound equivalents of the letters in this alphabet in today's Turkish with transcription signs.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Showing the spelling of vowels in Turkish words in Ottoman Turkish.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Showing the spelling of vowels in Arabic words in Ottoman Turkish, showing the signs called harekah used to represent vowels in Arabic.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Showing the spelling of vowels in Persian words in Ottoman Turkish.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Showing the writing forms of consonants specific to these languages in Turkish, Arabic and Persian words in Ottoman Turkish; Giving information about the consonants added to the Turkish alphabet of Arabic origin in Persian and Turkish.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Showing the spelling of vowels and consonants in Turkish words, with an emphasis on the spelling rules in Ottoman Turkish. Working on writing Turkish, Arabic and Persian words based on these rules
Week 9 - Theoretical
Giving general information about the writing of Turkish suffixes, spelling of vowels in Turkish suffixes.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Explaining the suffixes that became stereotyped in the Old Anatolian Turkish period and continued to be used in the same way in Ottoman Turkish.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Explaining Persian noun phrases and their rules
Week 12 - Theoretical
Explaining Persian adjective phrases and their rules
Week 13 - Theoretical
Explaining special situations regarding the writing and reading of Persian phrases
Week 14 - Theoretical
Explaining the number and gender agreement in Persian adjective phrases, both elements of which are Arabic words, explaining the Arabic number and gender categories.
