Objectives of the Course

This class deals with the political, religious, socio-economic and cultural structure of Europe in the Middle Ages, covering a period of approximately 1000 years between 500 and 1500. It examines the political, economic, religious, socio-economic and cultural developments of medieval Europe through the main topics such as feudal structure, religion-state relations, the interaction of the Western and Eastern worlds within the framework of the Crusades, scholastic thought and aims to develop students' historical analysis skills.

Course Content

It is planned to determine the boundaries of the Middle Ages on the axis of the debate on the concept of age and to discuss the period from the Migration of Tribes to the Geographical Discoveries in general terms. In this context, the Early Middle Ages, High Middle Ages and Late Middle Ages and the political, social and economic transformations that coincided with these periods will be evaluated chronologically. In particular, the political formations and social movements that occurred after the Migration of Tribes and the Western Roman Empire, the role of the church in social and political life, Byzantine relations with the Turkish-Islamic world, the Crusades, the birth of universities, scholastic thought, political structures and economic developments will be emphasized.

1.to be able to compare different ideas about the beginning or end of Medieval and to evaluate generally accepted opinion.
2.To be able to criticise the notion “age” in historical context and to list basic traits of Medieval Europe.
3.To be able to explain relations between Romans and Barbarians during the Period between Ancient and Medieval Christian World.
4.To be able to explain the impact of Christianity on the political structure and socio-cultural life of medieval Europe.
5.To be able to explain the notion “feudalism” and to show Roman-Germen effect in the formation of Feudalism.
6.To be able to recall the basic characteristics of Medieval Europe and define Medieval Civilization with its geographical and chronological structures.

The political and cultural structure of medieval Europe during the Carolingian Dynasty and Charlemagne

Evaluation of the causes, development and consequences of the Crusades for both Europe and the Turkish-Islamic world

The emergence of cities in the Middle Ages and the changing economic life, guilds, commercial and agricultural developments.

Strengthening of centralized kingdoms; the Holy Roman-German Empire, the kingdoms of England and France.

Socio-cultural structure of medieval Europe

The plague epidemic and its impact on the economic and social life of Europe.

Political struggles between powerful central kingdoms and the Hundred Years' War and the transition to the Renaissance.
