Objectives of the Course

Giving information about the Balkans, Anatolia, Mediterranean and Iran policies of the Ottoman Empire during the reigns of Mehmet II, Bayezid II, Selim I and Suleiman I, central administration organization of the Ottoman Empire and state order.

Course Content

Founding ideology and historical development of the Ottoman Empire. Rulers of this period and their activities with regard to political events.

Learning Outcomes
1.Being able to understand importance of the ideological changes in the state administraion that occured after the conquest of Istanbul.
2.Being able to get information about the Mediterranean and Venetian policies of the Ottoman Empire during this period.
3.Being able to grasp Eastern policy of the Ottoman Empire and learn Ottoman hegemony in Eastern and Southeastern regions.
4.Being able to understand importance of Egypt for the Ottomans.
5.Being able to get information about the developments in the legal matters that occured during the reign of Suleiman I.
6.Being able to get information about the Eastern and Western advancement of the Ottoman Empire and conducted wars during the reign of Suleiman I.

Cem Sultan incident. Enthronement of Bayezid II and his policy.

Ottoman relations with Hungary and Venice following the demise of Cem Sultan.

Shiah threat in Anatolia. History, origins and borders of the Shiism.

Enthronement of the Selim I. Struggle with Shah Ismail. Increase in the effect of Sunnite Islam in Ottoman Empire.
