Objectives of the Course

Giving an idea about the importance of justice, law making and enforcement in the Ottoman Empire, demonstrating that judicial systemand economical structure of the Ottoman Empire were tightly connected to each other.

Course Content

Judicial analysis of the kanunnames, relations of tahrir (census) registers and issued kanunnames, differences between the issued laws in different Ottoman provinces, Adaletnames in the Ottoman Empire, law articles about the land law and agricultural production, duties and powers of kadi, the most important lawman in the provinces.

Learning Outcomes
1.Being able to understand how the Islamic law was formed in the historical process.
2.Being able to understand the terms of religious and traditional law in the Ottoman Empire.
3.Being able to learn connections between agricultural production, taxation and land law.
4.Being able to grasp judicial regulations conducted by some Ottoman Sultans who were famous with their Lawgiver personalities.
5.Being able to grasp connection between the term of justice and administration.
6.Being able tı evaluate some samples from te Ottoman court records.

Timar system, agricultural production and taxation.

The term of Kanunname in the Ottoman Empire. Sanjak and Province Kanunnames.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Provincial administrators and judicial status of agricultural productors.

Provision of various court registers related to subfields of Ottoman Law to students.

Analysis of the Traditional Kanunname of Mehmet the Conquerer.
