Objectives of the Course

The aim of Ottoman Palaeography II course is to provide general theoretical information about the types of writing used in the bureaucracy, to provide general information about writing tools and equipment, and to enable students to recognise, examine and read the types of writing used, such as Rika, Nesih, Sülüs, Talik, Divani and Siyakat.

Course Content

The Ottoman Palaeography I course provides general information about Turkish-Islamic writing types and consists of a study environment focused on reading six of these writing types. The Ottoman Palaeography I course is designed to enable students to gain reading skills in writing types through practical work and assignments related to reading topics, using a teaching method based on student interaction.

Learning Outcomes
1.Students will learn about the paleographic elements (writing instruments, ink, etc.) of the types of writing they study.
2.Students will understand the relationship between paleography and fields such as historiography, archiving, and document criticism, and will learn about the products that emerge from these relationships.
3.Students who take the Ottoman Paleography course will have knowledge about the general course of Islamic calligraphy and writing art and will be able to examine the types of writing used during the Ottoman period in a historical context.
4.Students who take the Ottoman Paleography course will be able to distinguish the types of writing used in documents written in Ottoman Turkish and, taking these types of writing into account, will be able to roughly determine when the writing was written.
5.As a result of the instruction they receive, students can read and transcribe documents written in Ottoman Turkish using writing styles such as Rika, Talik, Divani nesih, sülüs, and siyakat.
