Objectives of the Course

Teaching the concepts of chemical kinetics, equilibrium, equilibrium in aqueous media, properties of acids and bases, buffer solutions, acid-base reactions, neutralization reactions and titrations, chemical thermodynamics, basic electrochemistry and nuclear chemistry, as well as providing the ability to apply chemical knowledge and concepts to the solution of chemical problems. Providing the ability to use the knowledge and skills gained in this course in upper-grade courses.

Course Content

In this course, besides acids and bases, types of solutions, concentration units and numerical properties are explained. Basic principles of chemical equilibrium, chemical kinetics and thermodynamics are also taught. It ends with a section examining redox reactions, batteries, corrosion, electrolysis, basic principles of electrochemistry and nuclear chemistry.

Name of Lecturer(s)
Assoc. Prof. Semiha KUNDAKCI
Learning Outcomes
1.Knows the physical properties of solutions, solution types and concentration units, makes calculations related to numerical properties.
2.Finds the expression of the rate law of a reaction and calculates the rate constant k, defines the role of activation energy in determining the rate of a reaction, understands reaction mechanisms and how they lead to rate laws, finds the order of the reaction.
3.Calculates chemical equilibrium concentrations and the equilibrium constant K, uses Le Chatelier's principle by knowing the factors affecting the equilibrium.
4.Knows the definitions of acid-base, calculates pH and pOH values, knows the concept of buffer solution and makes pH-pOH calculations.
5.Knows the concepts of enthalpy, entropy and free energy, applies the thermodynamic conditions necessary for a chemical reaction to occur in favor of products to reactions, explains voluntary/involuntary reactions and microstates.
6.Knows how to balance oxidation-reduction reactions, writes half and net cell reactions, calculates standard and nonstandard cell potentials, knows the Nernst equation, applies it and uses it in problems, knows the relationship between E-cell, ?G and Kd.
7.Knows the concepts of corrosion, electrolysis and battery types.
8.Knows the nature of nuclear reactions, the concepts of fission, fusion, natural radioactivity and radiation types and establishes a connection with environmental problems.
9.Uses chemistry knowledge correctly in classes and laboratories in the following years, understands the applications of chemistry in daily life.
