Objectives of the Course

It is aimed to examine the mosques built in the Early Ottoman Period in detail and localize them from the point of their plan typology and decorative features in the Turkish Architecture. It is aimed to designate the first occurrence style of this period’s architecture and art in Anatolia by indicating the diverging aspects of them from the Principalities Period Art during the same time course.

Course Content

Establishment date of the Ottoman Period and its area where it's established and accordingly mosques ,one of the works built first will be dwelled on in detail, plan typology of this period’s mosques will be prepared and these mosques will be scrutinized in detail. Similar and different aspects of this period’s mosques with the mosques of the Principalities Period and the Classic Ottoman Period will be discussed.

5.To be able to explain the characteristics of the mosque architecture of the Early Ottoman Period that influenced the mosque architecture of the Classic period.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Explaining briefly the political and cultural structure and, considering the other principalities, the art environment of Anatolia during the establishment of the Ottoman Empire and providing information about the topics to be discussed in the course.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Explaining the Early Ottoman Period mosque architecture by dividing their plan types into groups and scrutinizing the architectural features of the period.

Explaining the single-unit early period Ottoman mosques with visuals (İznik Haci Ozbek Mosque, Bilecik Orhan Gazi Mosque, Iznik Green Mosque)
Week 4 - Theoretical
Explaining the co-sized domed multi-unit mosques of the multi-unit early period Ottoman mosques with visuals (Bursa Ulu Mosque, Edirne Old Mosque)

Explaining the centrical-domed multi-unit mosques of the multi-unit early period Ottoman mosques with visuals (Edirne Üç Şerefeli Mosque)
