Objectives of the Course

To examine architecture, painting, sculpture and small works of art emerged and developed in The Dark Age, the Carolingian period, the Otto period, the Romanesque and Gothic periods covering the Dark Age (6th century) to the Renaissance period (16th century). To introduce Romanesque and Gothic works especially seen in the European countries such as France, England, Germany and Italy in detail . Scholastic philosophy, effective in this period and its impact on art are emphasized.

Course Content

Information about the Dark Age, the Carolingian period, the Otto period, the Romanesque and Gothic periods is given and the stylistic features and art works of these periods are explained in detail.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to recognize the works of the Dark Age.
2.To be able to comprehend the animal style and its similar and different aspects with the animal style seen in the Pre-Islamic era.
3.To be able to describe the works of the Carolingian period.
4.To be able to define the Otto period and its style.
5.To be able to describe the works of the Romanesque period and the characteristics of the period.
6.To be able to describe the works and the stylistic features of the Gothic period,
7.To be able to identify the similarities and differences between the Romanesque and Gothic periods.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Explanation of the terminology of Medieval European Art with visuals.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Giving information about the Dark Age and its history, and explaining the works of this period with visuals.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Giving information about animal style.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Giving information about the the Carolingian period, and introducing the architectural samples and handicrafts products of the Carolingian period with visuals.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Giving information about the Otto period and explaining the architectural works and crafts of this period with visuals.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Giving information about the the Romanesque and explaining features of the period.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Explaining the Romanesque architectural samples in England, France and Germany with visuals
Week 8 - Theoretical
Explaining the examples of Romanesque architecture in Belgium and Italy with visuals.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Giving information about the sculpture and paingting arts of the Romanesque period and explaining them with visuals
Week 10 - Theoretical
Giving information about the Gothic period, explaining features of the Early, High, Radiant and Ardent Gothic period and introducing the specific architectural elements of the Gothic style.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Explaining the examples of the Gothic architecture in France with visuals and scrutinizing the characteristics of the French Gothic.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Explaining the examples of Gothic architecture in England and Germany with visuals and scrutinizing the British and German Gothic features
Week 13 - Theoretical
Explaining the examples of the Gothic architecture in Italy with visuals and scrutinizing the characteristics of the Italian Gothic.
Week 14 - Theoretical
Giving information about the sculpture art of the Gothic period and explaining the samples with visuals.
