Objectives of the Course

The main objective of this course is to analyse the poems in terms of imagery and meaning.

Course Content

This course examines the poems gathered from various periods in terms of meaning, tone, figures of speech and imagery.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
Introduction to the course. A general discussion on poetry will be held.
Week 2 - Theoretical
What is poetry? A discussion on poetry and what makes poetry good or bad. Poems: ‘The Eagle’; ‘Winter’ and ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Reading the Poem will be the subject matter of this week’s classroom activity. Poems are not only for the eyes but also for the ears. Intonation and rhythm are the essential parts of a poem. We will discuss poetry in terms of musicality. Poems: ‘The Man He Killed’; ‘Is My Team Ploughing?’ and ‘Raven’.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Denotation and Connotation: We will examine poems through plain reading then try to understand the meaning underneath. Then we will concentrate on connotative meanings of the poems. Poems: ‘There is no frigate like a book’; ‘Richard Cory’ and ‘Base Details’.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Imagery: In this particular class, we will be focusing on ‘imagery’ and its kinds, such as visual, tactile, gustatory, auditory, etc. Poems: ‘Meeting at Night’; ‘Parting at Morning’ and ‘After My Last Song’.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Figurative Language I: ‘Metaphor’, ‘Personification’ and ‘Metonymy’ will be examined. Poems: ‘Presentiment’; ‘The Sea-Gull’; ‘To His Coy Mistress’. (This class may exceed into the next.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Figurative Language II: ‘Symbol’ and ‘Allegory’ will make up the content of this meeting. Poems: ‘The Road not Taken’ and From the Holy Sonnets by John Donne, No 10 ‘Death, be not proud’.

Poem Examination on Demand
Week 9 - Theoretical
Figurative Language III: ‘Paradox’; ‘Overstatement’; ‘Understatement’ and ‘Irony’ will constitute the class. Poems: ‘My Life Closed Twice’; ‘The Rose Family’ and ‘Ozymandias’.
Week 10 - Theoretical
In this particular class ‘Allusion’ and its use in poetry and related literary texts will be examined. Poems: ‘Out, Out-’ and ‘in Just’.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Meaning and Idea in poems will be discussed. ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’ and ‘Ars Poetica’.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Tone in poems will be discussed. Poems: ‘Apparently with No Surprise’, ‘Since There’s No Help’; ‘The Coming of Wisdom with Time’; ‘Futility’; Dead Man’s Dump’; ‘The Mention of Your Name’ and ‘Counter-Attack’.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Tone in poems will be discussed. Poems: ‘Apparently with No Surprise’, ‘Since There’s No Help’; ‘The Coming of Wisdom with Time’; ‘Futility’; Dead Man’s Dump’; ‘The Mention of Your Name’ and ‘Counter-Attack’.
