Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to to analyze American literature from its beginning in the seventeenth century and its development till the early nineteenth century by setting up a parallelism between the American history and American literature.

Course Content

The idea and history of colonization, Early colonial period, Puritanism, Enlightenment, Transcendentalism and Romanticism.

Learning Outcomes
1.The ability to learn and discuss authors and works from literary movements starting from the pre-colonial period until the mid-nineteenth century.
2.The ability to analyze American literary texts in a social, cultural and historical context.
3.The ability to identify the concepts and ideas that shape the intellectual and social life in colonial and revolutionary America.
4.The ability to exemplify the interaction between English and American literature.
5.Describe and conclude how to read a piece of literary work in English in a scientific manner
