Objectives of the Course

To provide students studying theology with the ability to read and understand religious, literary and cultural texts written in Ottoman Turkish and to benefit from these resources.

Course Content

By taking this course, the student is introduced to Ottoman Turkish, which represents a period in the historical course of the Turkish language. Thanks to this acquaintance, he learns the Ottoman Turkish alphabet, which consists of Arabic and Persian alphabets. In this way, he/she can both read Turkish texts written in this alphabet and have the competence to write in this alphabet.

Learning Outcomes
1.The student defines Ottoman Turkish.
2.The student determines the place of Ottoman Turkish in the historical course of Turkish.
3.The student reads texts written in the Ottoman Turkish alphabet.
4.The student writes in the Ottoman Turkish alphabet.
5.The student learns the writing styles in Ottoman Turkish.
6.The student knows and can distinguish the types of words in Ottoman Turkish.
7.The student can distinguish Turkish, Arabic and Persian letters and sounds in Ottoman Turkish.
8.The student analyzes the words of Arabic and Persian origin that came into Turkish from an etymological perspective.
9.The student guesses and interprets the periods in which the texts written in Ottoman Turkish were written.
10.The student uses web and mobile based Ottoman Turkish dictionaries.
