The aim of this course is an introduction to the philosophy of mind. It is intended to hold some problems and discussions on description of the mind in the history of philosophy; and to recognize some ontological and epistemological problems about the mind and arguments on the possibility of Artificial Intelligence.
Within the context of this course, some theories on the mind, the dualism of mind-body and some materialistic and reductionist theories against the cartesian dualism are discussed. First, some definitions of the mind are regarded within the context of the problem of substance. Second, the problem of other minds as an epistemological problem is analysed. And then, the problem of artificial intelligence and some theories on the possibility of AI; Alan Turing’s “Turing test” and Searl’s “Chinese room argument” as a counter argument.
