Objectives of the Course

The purpose of the Islamic Calligraphy Art - II course is to reinforce students’ understanding of the fundamental concepts of calligraphy within the context of Islamic aesthetics, to familiarize them with different styles and schools, and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the historical and contemporary place of calligraphy art. Additionally, it aims to facilitate comprehension of its relationships with architectural, Sufi, illumination, miniature, and bookbinding arts.

Course Content

This course revisits the fundamental concepts of Islamic calligraphy, explores its position within Islamic aesthetics, and examines various styles and schools. The meanings and interpretations of Celî script, practical applications such as architectural inscriptions and tomb epitaphs, and the tradition of calligraphy certification (icazetname) will be studied. The relationship between calligraphy and Sufi aesthetics, as well as its connections to other arts such as illumination, miniature, and bookbinding, will be analyzed. Furthermore, the conceptual development from Kufic to modern calligraphy, modern interpretations, and contemporary artists and institutions will be evaluated.
