Objectives of the Course

- To teach the structure, function and basic principles of immunology - Having knowledge about developed immunologic reactions in pets in various cases (diseases and vaccination) - To teach the usage of serological tests in order to diagnose the diseases and vaccine immunology

Course Content

Basic principles and definitions in immunology, immune system (myeloid and lymphoid serial) cells and tissues, immuneglobulins, humoral and cellular response, immunological tolerance, antigenic structure of microorganisms, hypersensitivity reactions.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to comprehend the basic structure of immune system and its importance in immune response
2.To be able to understand basic functions of humoral immunity and its role in body defence
3.To be able to explain basic functions of cellular immunity and its role in body defence
4.To be able to grasp the immune reactions and its results in disease cases for domestic animals
5.To be able to undertsand the basic principles of abnormal reactions like hyper sensitivity and autoimmune reactions and knows the importance of these situation in diseases
6.To be able to express the basic mechanism of antigen-antibody reaction and according to this basics, applies serological tests and evaluates tests appropriately
7.To be able to comprehend how to use the theoretical and practical information in spesific diseases which is going to be seen for next years

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Introduction to immunology, the body’s defenses, innate immunity, acquired immunity, antigen, the factors that influence antigenicity, main antigenic molecules, microbial and non-microbial antigens - Biosafety applications, definition of serology, basic equipment used in serology laboratory, biological and chemical substances, intended use
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
The cells of the immune system (myeloid system, macrophage, lymphocyte), receptor proteins on their surface and their roles for immune response - Structure of blood, blood collection procedures, serum, plasma, obtaining and usage areas
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Primary and secondary lymphoid organs of the immune system, their structures and functions - Serological reactions, mechanisms, areas of use
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Immunoglobulins (antibodies), their structures, classes and functions, immunoglobulin variants, immunoglobulins of domestic animals, immunoglobulins serving as B-cell receptor - Preparation of dilution liquids (FTS, PBS), dilutions at different ratios (1/2, 1/5, 1/10)
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Phagocytes, phagocytosis in macrophages and neutrophils, their importance for immune response - Precipitation tests, agar gel precipitation test and interpretation
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
MHC (the antigen-presenting receptors), the need for antigen processing, antigen-processing cells, processing of exogenous and endogenous antigens - Agglutination tests, rapid slide agglutination test and interpretation
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Antibody-mediated immune response, the induction of antibody synthesis, B cell response, plasma cells, memory cells, interactions between B cells and T cells - Performing and interpreting the slow tube agglutination test
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Cell-mediated immune response, T cell cytotoxicity, apoptosis, natural killer cell cytotoxicity, macrophage activation in cell-mediated immune response - Washing blood and preparing erythrocyte suspension, intended use(Mid-term Exam)
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Immunological tolerance (self tolerance and tolerance to foreign molecules) and introduction to mucosal immunity - Application and interpretation of the hemagglutination test
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Importance of immunoglobulins (IgA and IgE) for mucosal immunity, immunity on specific surface (gastrointestinal tract, mammary gland, urogenital tract, respiratory tract and skin) - Application and interpretation of the Hemagglutination-Inhibition test
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Development of the immune system in mammalian fetuses, immune response of newborn animals, transfer of immunity via placenta, transfer of immunity from mother to offspring - Other secondary bonding tests (complement fixation and Coombs test) basic information
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Bacterial antigens, resistance to bacteria, immunological defense mechanisms for bacterial infections, bacterial subversion of host defenses - Primary binding tests (ELISA, Immunofluorescence test, RIA) basic information
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Viral antigens, resistance to viruses, immunological defense mechanisms for viral infections, viral subversion of host defenses - Examination and interpretation of the results obtained by serological tests for the purpose of diagnosis of diseases or evaluation of vaccine immunity.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Hypersensitivity reactions, types of hypersensitivity and their mechanisms, autoimmunity and pathogenesis of autoimmunity - Vaccines, active immunity formation and vaccine applications
