Objectives of the Course

To provide a scientific background for students regarding reproduction, andrology, endocrinology, fertility and infertility. To have the veterinarians obtain the necessary knowledge regarding the issues about the methodology to be employed in the field.

Course Content

Basic principles of reproduction, andrology, endocrinology, fertility and infertility, herd fertility parameters, oestrus synchronization and spermatologic examinations will be given.

1.To be able to perform genital organ examination in female animals

3.To be able to have a knowledge on reproductive physiology and endocrinology of farm animals
4.To be able to comprehend how to collect semen from animals
5.To be able to interpret biochemistry and examination methodology of semen
6.To be able to define semen extension techniques, short and long term storage
7.To be able to have a background on oestrus signs and optimum time of insemination in female animals
8.To be able to have a background on infertility and related problems
9.To be able to perform oestrus synchronization in farm animals
10.To be able to describe basic principles of reproduction andperform artificial insemination in roosters.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
General perspective of reproduction and artificial insemination and its importance in animal breeding. Anatomy and functions of the genital organs in male and female reproduction.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Anatomy and physiology of genital organs in male and female animals. Andrological examination systematics in different animal species
Week 3 - Theoretical
Reproductive physiology in male animals (reproductive hormones, spermatogenesis, ejaculation)
Week 4 - Theoretical
Reproductive physiology in female animals (reproductive hormones, folliculogenesis, oogenesis, ovulation)
Week 5 - Theoretical
Gemete transport (sperm and oocye), capacitation, fertilization and early embryonic development
Week 6 - Theoretical
Sperm collection methods in domestic animals and ultrastructure and functional anatomy of sperm cells, acrosome, tail and other parts
Week 7 - Theoretical
Macroscopic and microscopic examination of semen (volume, motility, concentration, mass activity, live/dead ratio and abnormal sperm rate)
Week 8 - Theoretical
Use of hormones and controlled breeding in cow, mare, ewe, goat, bitch and queen, (Midterm exam)
Week 9 - Theoretical
Physico-chemical examination of semen, bacteriologic examination and semen transmitted diseases
Week 10 - Theoretical
Short and long term storage of semen (extension, freezing, storage and thawing) and the important factors which effect sperm quality in those steps
Week 11 - Theoretical
Oestrus cycle, signs and oestrus detection methods in female animals
Week 12 - Theoretical
Estimation of optimum time for insemination in cow, mare, ewe, goat, bitch and queen and artificial insemination techniques
Week 13 - Theoretical
Fertility parameters and infertility in cow, mare, ewe, goat, bitch and queen
Week 14 - Theoretical
Management of the breeding animals, possible reasons to remove from the stock and estimation of the fertility status
