Objectives of the Course

To teach morphological and physiological production traits of cattle, sheep, goat and horse. To teach rearing of cattle, sheep, goat and horse as theoretical and practical.

Course Content

General information about cattle rearing. Classification of cattle breeds. Turkish native cattle breed. Morphological and physiological traits of dairy cattle. Lactation. Beef cattle rearing. Fattening performance and carcass traits and grading. Morphological and physiological traits of sheep and goat breeds in Turkey and World. Lamb production methods. Morphological and physiological traits of horse breeds in Turkey and World. Care and management of race horses. Color and signs of horses. Care, condition and exercise.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to have technical background about using dairy techniques on field.
2.To be able to manage milking parlors with the knowledge of milking mechanism and milking machines.
3.To be able to explain beef cattle production methods.
4.To be able to comprehend sheep breeds and have knowledge for serving on sheep farms.
5.To be able to grasp goat breeds, consult breeders about extensive and intensive rearing methods.
6.To be able to understand horse breeds and have knowledge for serving on horse farms.
7.To be able to apply practical rearing procedures (numbering, recording, care, bath, quarantine etc)
8.To be able to apply body measurements of cattle, sheep, goat and horse, aging from teeth, grading and body condition scoring.
9.To use professional abilities for the contribution of developing of Veterinary knowledge for increasing the quality of animal care and public health.
10.To evaluate the physical, welfare, and nutritional condition of an animal or an animal group and to give some advice to the animal owner or raiser on this context.
11.To give some advice to the breeders and to apply preventive measurements related to animal health and welfare, and public health standards that conforming to animal species.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Biosecurity information for the course. General information about cattle rearing. General status of cattle production in Turkey and World. Classification of cattle breeds. Turkish native cattle breed.

Biosecurity information for the course, discussing cattle production activities and visual evaluation of Turkish native cattle breeds.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Morphological and physiological traits of dairy cattle.
Week 2 - Practice
Presentation and comparison of dairy cattle.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Udder shape and its development. Lactation. Environmental factors effecting milk production and composition.
Week 3 - Practice
Visit to a private dairy farm milking parlor, inspection of milking procedure.
Week 4 - Theoretical
The herd management of dairy cattle (The caring of calf, heifer, milking and dry cows) shelter, milking hygiene.
Week 4 - Practice
Visual presentation about The caring of calf, heifer, milking and dry cows.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Beef cattle rearing. Feedlot methods and periods.
Week 5 - Practice
Visit to a private feedlot farm.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Factors effecting feedlot performance. Carcass traits and grading.

Visual presentation about carcass traits and grading.
Week 7 - Theoretical
The economical importance of sheep and goat production. Present situation and problems of sheep-goat production in Turkey. Morphological and physiological traits of sheep breeds in Turkey and World.

Visual presentation and comparing of sheep breeds.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Midterm exam/Morphological and physiological traits of goat breeds in Turkey and World. Reproduction, milk production, wool/hair production and environmental effect to these production traits.
Week 8 - Practice
Visual presentation and comparing of goat breeds. Practical exercises about sheep numbering, recording, herd health and aging from teeth.
Week 9 - Theoretical
The herd management of sheep (management and nutrition of neonatal lambs, fattening of weaning ang after weaning, dry off, estrus synchronization), barns (location, models, inner design, equipments using in the barns). Practical applications (shearing, numbering, recording, bath for parasites

Horse breeding and its importance. Morphological and physiological traits of horse breeds in Turkey and World.

Presentation of horse breeds.
Week 11 - Theoretical
The herd management of horse (Horse farm management. Management of horse on pasture, rearing and management of foal, stallion and mare etc.)

House, housing and morphological inspection of Arab and Thoroughbred horses reared in faculty Horse Riding Club.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Care and management of race horses. Horse race organizations.
Week 12 - Practice
Handling, keeping, caring, exercising of horses in faculty Horse Riding Club.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Color and signs of horses. Care, condition and exercise. Blood groups, blood serum proteins, determining breed and parent.

Body measurement, body condition scoring, principals of pedigree records, abnormal behavior of horses, basic principles of horse managing.
