Ability to differentiate into different cell types and self-renewal are the two most important features of stem cells. There exist different types of stem cells. The aim of this course is to provide the student with a framework to understand basic properties of stem cells, different types of stem cells, isolation and derivation of various stem cells, and potential uses of stem cells in veterinary medicine.
Basic properties of stem cells, different stem cell types, isolation and development of stem cells in laboratory conditions, differentiation of stem cells to obtain various cell types, potential uses of stem cells in the treatment of certain diseases in veterinary medicine.
| Prof. Levent KARAGENÇ |
| 1. | Understands the basic properties of stem cells and their differences from other cells, including progenitor cells. |
| 2. | Understands the isolation, characterization of embryonal stem cells (ESC) and their use in medicine. |
| 3. | Understands the isolation, characterization and medical use of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) obtained from somatic cells, which have almost the same properties as ES cells. |
| 4. | Gain information about current clinical applications and potential areas of use of ESC and iPS cells in the field of regenerative medicine. |
| 5. | Gain knowledge about the stem cells specific to certain tissues (tissue specific) in the adult period, the functions and basic properties of these cells. |
