Objectives of the Course

To teach the student general structure of the cell, the basic unit of life and the properties of the tissues the cells formed assembling by cell division

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to know the morphological features of the cell; membrane structure and membrane transport and identify microscopic appearance of cell organelles.
2.To be able to know different types of cell divisions and recognize a dividing cell on microscopic examination.
3.To be able to know types of tissues.
4.To be able to know microscopy of tissues.
5.To be able to know functions of tissues.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Cell, structure of the cell, cytoplasm.
Week 1 - Practice
Biosecurity Applications
Week 2 - Theoretical
Organelles-membranes organelles; plasma membrane, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, lysosomes, microbodies, mitochondria.

Filamentous organelles, centrosome, spindle filaments, tonofibrils, myofibrils, neurofibrils

The cell signaling, cell nucleus, nuclear envelope, chromatin, Deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA) and genes, Ribonucleic acid (RNA),sex chromatin, nucleolus, nuclear matrix.

Cell division; amitosis, mitosis, meiosis, cell cyle, cell differentiation.

Microscopic examination of slides from mitosis
Week 6 - Theoretical
Epithelial Tissue; covering epithelia, glandular epithelia, myoepithelial cells, sensory epithelia.
Week 6 - Practice
Microscopic examination of slides from types of simple squamous epithelium and strafied squamous epithelium, serous, mucous and sero-mucous glands
Week 7 - Theoretical
Connective tissue;cells of the connective tissue; mesenchymal cells, reticular cells, fibroblasts, macrophages, adipose cells, plasma cells, mast cells, pigment cells.
Week 7 - Practice
Microscopic examination of slides fibroblast, mast cell and plasma cell.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Repetition of subjects and Midterm exam
Week 9 - Practice
Microscopic examination of slides pigment cells and adipose cells. Microscopic examination of slides reticular fibers.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage and fibrocartilage, perichondrium

Microscopic examination of slides hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage
Week 11 - Theoretical
Bone; microscopic structure of compact bone, bone cells, ossification, fracture repair, joints.

Microscopic examination of slides from bone.

Blood; platelets, lymph, hematopoiesis.
Week 12 - Practice
Microscopic examination of slides from mammal blood
Week 13 - Theoretical
Blood; platelets, lymph, hematopoiesis.

Microscopic examination of slides from chicken blood
Week 14 - Theoretical
Muscle tissue; skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle and smooth muscle. Nerve tissue; neurons, myelin sheats, synaptic communication, glial cells.
Week 14 - Practice
Microscopic examination of slides from the tongue, cardiac and smooth muscle. Microscopic examination of slides nerve cells.
