Objectives of the Course

-Teaching students the basic concepts of epidemiology - Ensuring that students have information about the factors that affect the emergence, transmission, and spread of the diseases that they may encounter during their education and professional life -Teaching what needs to be done for disease control and eradication

Course Content

The aim and the chapters of epidemipology, transmission and spread of infections, infection types, the structure of animal populations, distribution of diseases, the types and steps of epidemiological researches, health schemes, xoonotic diseases, control and eradication of diseases

1.To be able to learn the objectives of epidemiology, the usages and types of epidemiology
2.To be able to learn determinants of disease
3.To be able to have knowledge about the transmission and maintenance of infection, types of infection
4.To be able to learn the structure of animal populations, disease occurrence in populations, epidemiological rates, measures of disease occurrence
5.To be able to have distribution of diseases and basic ecological concepts
6.To be able to recognize types of epidemiological investigation and the essential steps in an epidemiological investigation
7.To be able to recognize structure of health schemes
8.To be able to recognize classification and characteristics of zoonoses
9.To be able to explain strategies of disease control and eradication, important factors disease control and eradication programmes, methods of control and eradication of important diseases

Week 1 - Theoretical
Definition and objectives of epidemiology, types of epidemiology; descriptive, analytical, experimental, theoretical epidemiology
Week 2 - Theoretical
Determinants of disease; host, agent and environmental determinants
Week 3 - Theoretical
The transmission and maintenance of infection; horizontal and vertical transmission, maintenance of infection
Week 4 - Theoretical
Types of infection; systemic, local, focal, opportunistic, latent, subclinical, secondary, mixed infection, peracute, acute, subacute, chronic infection
Week 5 - Theoretical
The structure of animal populations; contagious and separated populations, occurrence of disease; sporadic, endemic, epidemic and pandemic, epidemiological rates; morbidity, mortality, lethality, measures of disease occurrence; prevalence, incidence, ratios, proportions and rates
Week 6 - Theoretical
Distribution of disease; temporal and spatial distribution
Week 7 - Theoretical
Types of epidemiological investigation; qualitative and quantitative investigations
Week 8 - Theoretical
Analytical experimental research, analytical observational research, model study and continuous observation (Mid-term Exam)
Week 9 - Theoretical
The essential steps in an epidemiological investigation; objective and plan of investigation, the nature of data, coding of data, collecting of data, sources of epidemiological data, analysis and representation of data
Week 10 - Theoretical
Health schemes; structure of health schemes, dairy health schemes, beef health schemes, sheep health schemes, poultry health schemes
Week 11 - Theoretical
Zoonoses; classification of zoonoses, important zoonoses, mode of transmission of zoonotic diseases - prevention of zoonotic diseases
Week 12 - Theoretical
Zoonoses; important zoonoses, mode of transmission of zoonotic diseases -prevention of zoonotic diseases
Week 13 - Theoretical
Disease control and eradication; strategies of control and eradication, important factors in control and eradication programmes, methods of control and eradication of important diseases (OIE List A - B diseases)
