Objectives of the Course

It aims to study the living organism and their functions; and to give updated information to students with the theoretical and practical courses.

Course Content

It aims to transfer the knowledge of the students about physiology to their further clinical courses and veterinary practice.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to express structure and function of heart and cardiovascular system physiology
2.To be able to recognize respiratory system and its functions
3.To be able to explain body fluids and excretory physiology
4.To be able to list metabolic processes and thermoregulation
5.To be able to obtain information about hormones and comparative reproductive physiology in domestic animals.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Structure of the heart, the pumping action of the heart and its regulation, impulse generating system of the heart, cardiac cycle, extrinsic cardiac nerves and its effects, Frank-Starling Law, cardiac and circulatory receptors, heart reflexes, heart sounds and electrocardiogram.

General informations about laboratory rules and biosafety applications, cardiovascular physiology simulations
Week 2 - Theoretical
Arteries, veins, capillaries and hemodynamic of circulation.
Week 2 - Practice
Electrocardiography
Week 3 - Theoretical
Pulse, systemic blood pressure, regulation of blood pressure, lymphatic circulation, edema, special circulation
Week 3 - Practice
Measuring of the electrical axis of the heart and interpretation of ECG
Week 4 - Theoretical
Ventilation mechanics, lung volume and capacities, velocity of the alveolar ventilation, airway functions, oxygen and carbon dioxide diffusion in the membrane, carrying of the oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood and body fluids

Regulation of respiration, acid-base balance and avian respiration & Pulse and blood pressure

Body fluid compartments, urine formation by the kidneys, glomerular filtration, renal blood flow and its control, tubular function

Recording of mechanical respiratory movements

Maximal and minimal urine concentration mechanisms, extracellular osmolarity and regulation of sodium concentration, regulation of acid-base balance, micturation, avian excretory physiology

Embryonic development of reproductive organs, sexual and breeding maturation, male reproductive system in domestic animals, spermatogenesis, male reproductive hormones, sperm quality

Simulations related to different hormones activation

Female reproductive system, oogenesis, ovulation, female reproductive hormones, menstrual cycle, estrus cycle
