Objectives of the Course

-Teaching students the morphological and cultural characteristics of microorganisms that cause infectious diseases that they may encounter during their education and professional life. -Teaching the metabolism of microorganisms, genetics, relationships between microorganisms, microorganism, environment, and organism -Teaching the isolation and identification of microorganisms -Knowing the properties of chemotherapeutics and disinfectants and teaching antimicrobial susceptibility tests, teaching the principles of sterilization, disinfection and biosecurity procedures -To teach the correct application of biosafety principles, including equipment sterilization and disinfection of clothing.

Definition of Microbiology laboratory and history of microbiology, sterilization, disinfection, antisepsis and practical methods, anatomical structure of microorganisms, microscopes, nutrition and growth of microorganisms, stains and stanining methods, microorganism genetics, isolation and identification of microorganisms, antibiotics and disinfectants

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to name the microscopic, macroscpic and anatomical structures of microorganisms that cause infectious diseases
2.To be able to explain the chemical properties, antigenic properties and virulence factors of microorganisms
3.To be able to identify the nutrition, growth and enzymes of microorganisms
4.To be able to interpret genetics, genetical variations and genetic transmission of microorganisms
5.To be able to identify the microorganismal and environmental relations of microorganisms
6.To be able to explain the sampling and collecting specimen for laboratories and have knowledge about conventional and molecular diagnostic methods
7.To be able to describe the properties of antibiotics and disinfectants
8.To be able to apply the antimicrobial susceptibility testings
9.To be able to correctly apply biosafety principles, including equipment sterilization and disinfection of clothing.

Aims of the course, introduction to microbiology, history of microbiology, classification and nomenclature of microorganisms - Information on biosafety practices, introduction of the microbiology laboratory, working principles in the laboratory, laboratory accidents and their prevention
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Morphological characteristics of microorganisms; macroscopical and microscopical morphology - Sterilization, disinfection, antisepsis and application methods
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Structural characteristics of microorganisms; cell wall, capsule, flagella, fimbriae and pilus, cytoplasmic membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, endospore, capsid, envelope - Microscopes and microscopy principles
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Chemical structure of microorganisms, virulence factors of microorganisms, variations in virulence of microorganisms, antigenic characteristics of microorganisms - Production of microorganisms, preparation of media and cultivation methods
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Nutritional and growth characteristics of microorganisms; nutritional classification of microorganisms, nutritional requirements, growth requirements, factors affecting growth of microorganisms, growth media for microorganisms, growth characteristics of microorganisms - Paints and dyeing methods and simple dyeing

Metabolic characteristics of microorganisms; enzymes of microorganisms, factors affecting enzyme activity of microorganisms, measurement of enzyme activity, metabolism of microorganisms - Gram staining

Genetic characteristics of microorganisms; variations (modification and mutation) and genetic material transfer (transformation, conjugation and transduction) in microorganisms - Spore staining (Mid-term Exam)

Genetic characteristics of microorganisms; extra chromosomal genetic elements, characteristics of plasmids, classification of plasmids, transposable elements, (transposons, insertion sequences [IS elements], Mu phages, integrons) - Fungi staining

Bacteriophages; classification of phages, morphological and growth characteristics of phages, types of phage-infection, lysogeny, isolation of phages, phage typing, phages in recombinant DNA technology - Examination and interpretation of preparations

General characteristics of fungi; morphological features, growth, reproduction and metabolic requirements, epidemiology in fungal diseases, examination, diagnosis and treatment - Measurement of biochemical activity

Isolation and identification of microorganisms; selection, collection and transport principles of specimens for microbiological examination, microbiological and serological diagnostic methods - Motility examination

Molecular microbiology and biotechnology; gene cloning, vectors in molecular biology, methods for amplification of nucleic acid, molecular typing methods, biotechnological methods for diagnosis of infectious diseases - Performing and interpreting the antibiogram test

Chemotherapeutics and disinfectants; chemotherapeutics, mechanism of action of chemotherapeutics, resistance to chemotherapeutics, antimicrobial activity in vitro, disinfection, mechanism of action of disinfectants - Bacteria counting methods
