Objectives of the Course

To teach and practice basic beekeeping and aquaculture, to teach bee diseases and pests, to gain ability to diagnose and treat diseases.

Course Content

Breeds of honeybee, rules of basic beekeeping and aquaculture, honeybee diseases and pests, diagnosis and treatment of pathogens, prevention against diseases, inspection of hive and bee in laboratory and in the field.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to describe honeybees and breeds of honeybees
2.Knows that the basic rules of beekeeping and breeding
3.Recognize that the honeybee adult diseases, their knows that the diagnosis, treatment and prevention methods
4.To be able to grasp how to diagnose, treat diseases of larvae honeybees and learn ways of prevention.
5.To be able to inspect hives and bee in both laboratory and field

Week 1 - Theoretical
Importance and history of beekeeping in Turkey
Week 1 - Practice
Importance of beekeeping, video about the morphology of honey bee, introduction of the queen, workers and drone, types of hives (Dadant, Langstroth).
Week 2 - Theoretical
Terms in beekeeping, equipments used in beekeeping, maintenance of hives and how to manipulate and approach hives
Week 2 - Practice
Introduction of beekeeping equipments
Week 3 - Theoretical
Anatomy, morphology, taxonomy, biology and breeds of honey bees
Week 3 - Practice
Video display about the maintenance and layout of hives. Preparation of cake and syrup.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Interactions between beekeeping and environment, swarming and transporting bees
Week 4 - Practice
Introduction of nectarian plants and pollen resources
Week 5 - Theoretical
Products of bee (honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly, bee venom)
