Objectives of the Course

- Bacterial and mycotic diseases of companion animals other than poultry, especially the epidemiology of these diseases - Sample collection, selection of appropriate laboratory diagnostic tests, interpretation and understanding of test results - Control and vaccination of bacterial and mycotic diseases, and training of students with knowledge on the control of zoonotic diseases - Taking appropriate measures, including recognizing the notifiable, registering and suspicious symptoms of zoonotic diseases and informing the relevant authorities

Streptococci and other infections, Staphylocci infections, Corynebacterium ve Rhodococcus infections, Actinomycet, Nocardia ve Dermatophilosis infections, Listeria infections, Bacillus infections, Clostridium infections, Clostridium perfringens infections, Clostridium novyi ve Clostridium haemolyticum infections, Tuberculosis ve paratuberculosis, infections, Pseudomonas infections, Burkholderia infections, Brucella infections, Bartonella infections.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to understand bacteria that causes diseases in domestic animals and apply the colony and singular morphologic properties of these bacteria
2.To be able to grasp the transmission and pathogenesis of the bacteria
3.To be able to know and apply the subjects of collecting, storing and transporting samples for diagnosis in bacterial infections, selecting appropriate diagnostic tests, interpreting and understanding test results.
4.To be able to express the hygiene rules and vaccines for preventing diseases
5.To be able to Take appropriate measures, including recognizing the notifiable, registering and suspicious symptoms of zoonotic diseases and informing the relevant authorities.

Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Introduction to Special Microbiology and information about the course, infections caused by Streptococcus species - Biosafety practices, gram staining and microscopic examination in Streptococcus species, taking milk sample with mastitis, sending it to the laboratory, laboratory diagnostic procedure, CAMP and Catalase tests
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Staphylococcal Infections - Gram staining and microscopic examination in Staphylococcus species, taking milk sample with mastitis, sending it to the laboratory, laboratory diagnostic procedure, CAMP and Coagulase tests
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Corynebacterium and Rhodococcus infections - Examination of Corynebacterium species and Rhodococcus equi by Gram staining, examination of colonies, CAMP test (C. renale, R. equi)
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Actinomycet, Nocardia and Dermatophilosis infections - Laboratory diagnosis of Actinomycet, Nocardia and Dermatophilosis
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Listeria infections - Examination of Listeria species by Gram staining
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Bacillus infections - Examination of the preparations of Bacillus anthracis species, visualization of spore structures and laboratory diagnostic procedure
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Introduction to Clostridium infections - Determination of the clinical diagnosis procedure for sample collection in Clostridium infections
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Clostridium perfringens infections - Examination of the preparations of Clostridium perfringens species, visualization of spore structures and laboratory diagnostic procedure (Mid-term Exam)
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Clostridium novyi and Clostridium haemolyticum infections - Examination of preparations of Clostridium novyi and Clostridium haemolyticum species, visualization of spore structures and laboratory diagnostic procedure
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Tuberculosis ve paratuberculosis infections - Ziehl-Neelsen staining in Mycobacterium species
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
General features of Enterobacteriaceae family - General microscopic structure and laboratory diagnosis of enterobacteria

Pseudomonas infections - Morphological structures and laboratory diagnosis of Pseudomonas species
