Objectives of the Course

1. To teach principles of general surgery and definition of important general surgical diseases of the domestic animals. 2. To teach clinical findings of surgical diseases 3. To give information about diagnosis, differential diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of surgical disease according to their clinical findings.

Learning Outcomes
1.General surgery principles.
2.The important general surgical diseases of the domestic animals
3.Aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical findings, diagnosis, prognosis and correct treatment of these diseases and disorders frequently shown in domestic animals
4.The correct and appropriate treatment of these diseases, considering the economical aspect of animals
5.How to utilize theoretical and practical knowledges learnt during this course to the Small and Large Animal Surgery Courses in following semesters.
6.Basic knowledge about activity areas of Surgery
7.Knows and applies asepsis-antisepsis conditions. Knows how to prepare equipment, clothing, operation area and operator in accordance with aseptic conditions (sterilization, disinfection).

Week 1 - Theoretical
Aim of the course. Introduction of course notes and books. Asepsis, antisepsis, Sterilization, Disinfection, Surgical Instruments
Week 2 - Theoretical
Injection (General principles, intradermic, subcutaneous, intramusculary, intravenous), Incison (basic, complex, with guide, without guide)
Week 3 - Theoretical
Punction, Drainage, Dressing, Bandage
Week 4 - Theoretical
Surgical sutures, Suture materials and Suturing techniques (simple interrupted, continuous, horizontal matress, vertical matress, X sutures)
Week 5 - Theoretical
Evaluation of inflammation from clinical aspect. Acute and chronic abscess
Week 6 - Theoretical
Gangrene-Necrosis, Burnst, Freezing
Week 7 - Theoretical
Atrophy, Stenosis, Cyst, Dilatation- Diverticulum, Hypertrophy- Hyperplasia
Week 8 - Theoretical
Surgical diseases of bones and joints, (Midterm exam)
Week 9 - Theoretical
Wound: Aetiology, Classification. Treatment, Healing and Complications of Wounds
Week 10 - Theoretical
Ulcus, Fistula, Hernia
Week 11 - Theoretical
Bursitis, Heamatom, Oedema
Week 12 - Theoretical
Phlegmon, Muscle and tendon diseases ( Tendinitis,Tendovaginitis)
Week 13 - Theoretical
Diseases of blood and lymph vessels (Phlebitis, Lymphangitis)
Week 14 - Theoretical
Diseases of nervous tissues (Neuritis, Paralysis), Joint diseases (Arthritis)
