Objectives of the Course

The aims of this course are; 1. to inform the students about viruses (morphology, taxonomy, replications mechanism, isolation and identification of viruses), 2. to describe virus infections (Etiological, epidemiological, clinically, pathologically and diagnostically properties of these infections) 3. to inform about strategies for prevention from viral infections 4. to teach zoonotic diseases that is caused by viruses to earn the students ability to practice these virological knowledge

Course Content

This course focuses on General Virology and Viruses are important for veterinary medicine and also zoonotic viruses.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to have general knowledge about viruses and virological science.
2.To be able to name diseases, which occur or can arise in Turkey and which are important for animal and public health and in addition for diagnosis and prevention of these infections
3.To be able to comprehend how to work in virology labors
4.To be able to grasp criteria in sampling for the purpose of viral diagnosis; determination and selection of suitable materials, sending samples to the virology laboratories, preparation of inoculum from suspected material
5.To be able to comprehend criteria in sampling for the purpose viral diagnosis; determination and selection of suitable materials, sending samples to the virology laboratories, preparation of inoculum from suspected material
6.To be able to comprehend isolation or production, determination, quantification and identification of viruses and diagnostic methods for virus infection
7.To be able to apply basic procedures for diagnostic methods in virology lab.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Introduction to Virology and information about the course: Presentation of recommended books to learn virology. Importance of viruses and virology for animal and public health. History of Virology. Definition of virus: General Characters of Viruses. The Differences between viruses and other microorganisms
Week 1 - Preparation Work
Showing of movies and slides about viruses and virology.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Morphological structure of viruses, chemical composition of virions, function of virus components.
Week 2 - Preparation Work
Introduction of virology laboratory, work principles and safety in the laboratory. Information about laboratory materials. Sterilization, disinfection and antisepsis.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Viral Replications. Antiviral drugs, interference, interferon
Week 3 - Preparation Work
Diagnosis of viral infections. Criteria in sampling for the purpose to research and diagnosis; determination and selection of suitable materials, sending samples to the virology laboratories, preparation of inoculum from suspected material.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Diversity and Taxonomy of viruses

Virus isolation. Inoculation methods in the embryonic chicken egg
Week 5 - Preparation Work
Tissue and cell cultures. Preparation of primer cell cultures.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Epidemiology, pathogenesis, immunology of virus infections and viral vaccines.

Preservation of cell cultures. Virus inoculation in cell culture. Determining of virus replication in cell culture.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Picornaviridae and infections of picornaviruses. (Footh and Mouth disease virus, enterovirus, rhinovirus).

Virus titration and plaque test.

Neutralization test
Week 9 - Theoretical
Rhabdoviridae and infections of rhabdoviruses (Rabies, vesicular stomatitis and ephemeral fever viruses)

Hemaglutination test. Showing about labor diagnostic of Rabies.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Bunyaviridae, Reoviridae and their infections (akabane, blue tongue and african horse sickness viruses, reovirus and rotavirus infections in different species)

Agar Gel Immunodiffussion and Complement Fixation tests.

Paramyxoviridae and infections of paramyxoviruses ( Rinderpest, Peste des petits ruminants, distemper, PI-3 and respiratory syncytial viruses)
