Objectives of the Course

To teach the basic principles of animal breeding and to state parameters used in animal breeding studies. To teach selection and selection methods. To teach breeding methods

Course Content

Phenotype, genotype, environment , phenotypic and genotypic variation, its components and the genotype-environment interaction. Degree of heritability and repeatability. Genetic gain. Selection methods. Selection methods used in sire selection. Pure breeding, conversion crossbreeding, combination and commercial crossbreeding.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to figure out the importance of animal breeding in animal husbandry.
2.To be able to acquire data basis about animal breeding if he/she work on animal production and learn some main animal breeding parameters.
3.To be able to comprehend how to work with the necessary basic information if he / she woks in this field in the future
4.To be able to list basic principles about selection and selection methods.
5.To be able to grasp how to generate new genetic combinations and how to use breeding methods for developing the present genetic structure.

Degree of heritability and its properties, calculating degree of heritability, importance of the heritability degree on breeding
Week 4 - Theoretical
Selection, genetic effects of selection, generation interval and calculation of the genetic gain
Week 5 - Theoretical
Estimation of the genetic gain, factors affecting genetic gain, intensity degree of selection, the possibilities of developing the genetic gain

Repeatability, calculating of the repeatability, the importance of the repeatability degree at breeding
