Objectives of the Course

To state the importance of laboratory animals in scientific researches. To teach the breeding methods in rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits. To teach the main conditional specifications in laboratory animal houses. Finally to teach the basic principles about using a laboratory animal.

Course Content

Production methods used in laboratory animals. Basic principles in laboratory animal houses. Physical factors affecting the laboratory animal production. Mouse, rat, hamster, guinea pig, rabbit, gerbil bredding. Welfare and ethics in laboratory animal breeding.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to apply basic principles of laboratory animal breeding methods.
2.To be able to know unit in laboratory animal housing and give directions about this subject
3.To be able to learn how to take hygienic measurements in laboratory animal breeding.
4.To be able to apply the effects of physical factors in laboratory animal breeding.
5.To be able to learn the morphological and physiological characters of mice, rat, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, and gerbil.
6.To be able to learn the usage scope of mice, rat, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, and gerbil in scientific researches.
7.To be able to learn the conditions of laboratory animal houses.
8.To be able to realize some basic applications in mice, rat, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, and gerbil.
9.To have knowledge of organization, management and legislation related to veterinary medicine.
