Objectives of the Course

Giving fundamental design knowledge for transportation engineering and highway engineering.

Course Content

Introduction, definitions of highway components, characteristics of road users and vehicles, vehicle movements, general characteristics of highway traffic, highway capacity, selection of highway geometric standards, Route location survey, horizontal curves and super-elevation, transition curves, road profile and vertical curves, planning of urban roads, intersections, highways drainage.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to learn the scope of transportation engineering
2.To have knowledge of the basic concepts of highway engineering and general characteristics of highway elements
3.To be able to learn the general properties of highway traffic, the concept of capacity and the concept of Level of Service
4.To have knowledge about highway geometric design by using the basic concepts of highway engineering
5.To be able to understand the principles of highway design by applying the basic concepts of associated with highway route design.
