Objectives of the Course

Emphasizing reading and writing, this course is an introduction to the rhetorical process. Students receive extensive background in strategies of planning, drafting and revising their own, original work. Students will also get help in developing voice and authority in communicating their own ideas and experiences to a specific audience, as well as in recognizing their own voice as one of many entering into an ongoing critical conversation. In other words, through writing, style and revision are major emphasis in the course. The subject will also be thinking, reading, learning, discussing and writing, all indispensable skills to success in the academy and to being an active citizen in our world. This will be achieved through intense engagement with three vital activities, critical thinking, critical reading and critical writing. More specifically, in writing the focus will be on preparing outlines and writing Compare and Contrast, Cause and Effect and Argumentative essays, as well as free-writing, editing, peer reviewing and class discussions.

Course Content

During this course, the most outstanding concepts are reading essays in various types and learning how to create a plan for writing, an effective outline in order to be able to write an 'Expository', ‘Comparison-Contrast Essays’, ‘Cause&Effect Essays’ and ‘Argumentative Essays’ which will help the students during and after their academic life.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to focus on a specific purpose and implement writing activity in line with this specific purpose
2.To be able to anticipate the needs of different readers and produce writing portfolios appropriate for readers, adequate in terms of grammar and vocabulary, planned as introduction, body and conclusion parts.
3.To be able to recognize and comprehend the differences among different kinds of paragraphs and essays, use the structures appropriate for those different situations and produce written portfolios.
4.To be able to do excercises appropriate for the topic and use reliable and valid data for the production of the essay portfolio
5.To be able to use writing to record, explore, organize, and communicate, apply international writing standards and rules and analyze the writing portfolios accordingly.
6.To be able to develop standards of good writing of their own and their classmates which they can evaluate, criticise, comprehend and apply from the beginning phase of writing
