The aim of this course is to examine the main political, social, economic and cultural transformations in world history from the late 18th century to the early 20th century from a global perspective. Students are expected to understand the main developments such as the Age of Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, imperialism, the age of revolutions, nation-state formations and modernisation processes in their historical contexts. The course also aims to evaluate the interactions and counter-reactions of non-Western societies with these processes.
This course examines the major transformations in world history from the late 18th century to the early 20th century from a global perspective. After discussing the place and meaning of the Modern Age in historiography, the political and social effects of Enlightenment thought are analysed. The emergence of the age of revolutions with the American and French Revolutions, the effects of this process on the concept of nation-state and its inspirational role in different societies are evaluated. Then, the economic, social and spatial consequences of the Industrial Revolution and the reflections of this transformation on societies outside Europe are discussed. In the 19th century, the political and cultural transformation attempts in Latin America, Asia and Africa are analysed within the framework of imperialism and colonialism. The Revolutions of 1848, nationalist movements and the formation of nation-states are evaluated as one of the important breaking points of this period. At the same time, reform movements in major empires such as the Ottoman Empire, China, Japan and India are analysed comparatively. In the following weeks of the course, the formation of the global capitalist system, the interactions of industrialisation on a global scale, migration and inequalities are discussed. The course ends with the causes, development and effects of World War I on world history.
