Objectives of the Course

• To explain and explore the relationship between the social norms which are related to gender, gender roles, gender based division of labour and women’s status within the family and society, • To explain and analyse the changing nature of housework and gender based division of labour particularly after women’s workforce participation, • To explain and discuss different approaches to family and to its functions particularly in modern era, • To provide students with an understanding of different approaches towards family in order to analyse them critically, • To explain and analyse the effects of industrialisation on family structure

Course Content

Theories of Family and Critical Family Theory; Patriarchal Ideology, Gender, The Social Construction of Gender Roles and Family; Family from a Historical Perspective; Changes in Family Structure via Industrialisation; Marriage and Divorce; Methods in Researching Family; The Structure and Changes in Urban and Rural Families in Turkey; The Changes in the Organisation of Family in Turkey.
