Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to learn some basic political science concepts at undergraduate level and to reveal the functions of main political institutions and their interactions with each other. Learning the basic political institutions and concepts will play an important role in the development of individuals' democratic citizenship and sociological perspective, in order to make sense of and explain daily political debate, political development, conflict, tension and events. Based on the fact that the political is also social, it is expected that they will contribute to the sociological knowledge of the students by understanding the political phenomena.

Course Content

In this course, concepts such as the state, government and forms of government, regimes, constitution, legal system, ideology, political parties, democracy, nation-state, which are in the field of political science, will be discussed. In addition, in the course, the basic concepts and institutions of political science will be covered without being separated from the historical context of the social and political conditions in which they were born and developed. Although politics, as one of the basic social institutions, is as old as the history of humanity, its scientific understanding and analysis was only possible in the 19th century. In the period of its emergence, it primarily examines areas such as the state, government and government forms, regimes, and legal system. The development of political science accelerated after the middle of the 20th century. At the point we have reached, there have been significant changes in both its methods, its subjects and its scope. The 21st century has revealed much more important developments and concepts. Our course includes discussions that will cover all these developments.

Learning Outcomes
1.1. It is expected that students will understand the some basic concepts within the political science like state, political parties, bureaucracy, interest groups
2.2. Students will be expected to grasp the historical, political and social conditions in which such concepts and political institutions were emerged and developed.
3.3.Students should have knowledge and skills at undergraduate level about the basic concepts and institutions of political science
4.4. Learning the basic political concepts and institutions and to grasp how these interact with daily political practices, power struggle and political tension.
5.5. While students increase their political understanding it will be expected to increase their sociological understandings as well.
