Objectives of the Course

The main objective of the course is to evaluate changes in family structure in Turkey by looking at the family, family life, social meaning of family, power relations and gender-based division of labour from a sociologically critical perspective. The main tool in the way of reaching those aims is based on readings of important research papers and carry out discussions.

Course Content

A General Introduction to Studies of family life in Turkey; Theories of Family; Gender-based Division of Labour, Power Relations Within the Family and their analysis in Turkish case; Relationship between power relations within the family life and violence against women; Divorce and analysis from Turkey; Family structure in urban areas in Turkey and the dynamics of its changes; Family structure and the dynamics of change in rural areas in Turkey: In terms of the reflections of neo-liberal policies; Changes in social policies and legal regulations in Turkey and their reflections on family
