Objectives of the Course

To teach theoretical approaches, definitions, branches of linguistics such as Pre-Saussure Linguistics, scientific period of linguistics, Ferdinand de Saussure and basic concepts of Course in General Linguistics, Post-Saussure Linguistics (R.Jakobson), André Martinet and double articulation, N.Chomsky and transformational-generative grammar. Teaching the students the application area of these definitions and theoretic approaches

Course Content

Teaching Pre-Saussure Linguistics, scientific period of linguistics, Ferdinand de Saussure and basic concepts of General Linguistics, Post-Saussure Linguistics, theoretical approaches, definitions, basic concepts and branches of linguistics.

Learning Outcomes
1.To be able to comprehend that linguistics is not a name given to grammar and is a different science than philology and comprehending that it is an inseparable whole with literature
2.To be able to analyse that human language is a perfect and effective tool compared to other non-linguistic systems, it is impossible to define language without referring to communication, on-linguistic sign systems such as sign, signal, symbol, icon, helps to transmit special messages and these systems are analyzed by semiotics
3.To be able to identfy the works that shows the evolution of Linguistics
4.To be able to comprehend that language is a medium for communication
5.To be able to comprehend the structure of linguistic communication, relation between linguistic sign and referent and properties of linguistic sign
6.To be able to explain the binary oppositions (language/speech, synchrony/diachrony, syntagmatic relation/paradigmatic relation, substance/form, system/value) that are stated in Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics.
7.To be able to comprehend Structuralism, its basic principals and how it is theorized in the frame of concepts developed by Saussure
